New Bill Could Save 700 Maine Education Jobs

A new health and education bill could save up to 700 teacher jobs in Maine, according to government estimates.

The Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act (H.R. 1586), which the House just passed (it cleared the Senate on August 5), includes $10 billion to save teacher jobs and $16.1 billion in health assistance to the states.

The bill is expected to get President Obama's signature.

10,000 Mainers Eligible for Extended Unemployment Benefits

Over 10,000 unemployed Mainers are now eligible to receive extended unemployment benefits through November 30, 2010, according to the Maine Department of Labor. This week, President Obama signed into law legislation that will extend both the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) and Extended Benefits (EB) programs for those who had exhausted their current unemployment benefits.

Rep. Pingree Introduces Bill to Help Schools Buy Local Food

Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree introduced a bill this week that aims to increase the amount of local, presumably healthier food that is served in public schools.

“Problems like diabetes and childhood obesity are clear signs that we are not doing enough to teach children healthy eating habits. At the same time, small, local farms are disappearing in a system that favors huge producers and highly processed foods,” said Pingree.

Aroostook County Empowerment Zone Secures $499k USDA Grant
