Dealing with Maine's Budget Gap

When Bruce Springsteen first sang the line, “The times are tough now, just getting tougher…” back in 1984, he likely had no idea how perfectly he would be describing the economic climate of 2009. Late last year, we learned how tough the times were. The Legislature would have to find a way to close a budget gap of more than $800 million. Since then, the times have been getting tougher, a lot tougher.
Since November, the state of Maine has lost more than $1.4 billion in revenue due to the global economic recession. In two years, our state budget has dropped from $6.3 billion to around $5.6 billion. That is worth mentioning becau....
