this is retarded... the security officers aren't shown to use any type of excessive force... i didn't see any weapons or fists used. they used proper procedure to restrain students who were interfering with their work. the dude shouldn't have approached them in the first place. i don't like cops/security guards that much, but i don't see anything wrong with the way they handled this. all they did was hold the kid down for the police to get there. the only reason this video even seems dramatic is because all these little rich kids have never had to deal with the police, and all the drunk chicks standing around screaming over nothing... GET OVER IT!
A fist -albeit it unclenched- pushes a kids face into the floor until his nose breaks. This kid is taken to jail- without medical treatment - on charges of criminal trespassing and assault. This is the campus he pays to be on, and there are recordings security guards admitting no use of physical violence on the part of the students- discounting both of those charges.
As for the other student, he was maced three times in the face. Get your facts straight, please. Then you may pass judgment as to whether this is police brutality or not.
I am not surre what you are trying to pull here with this controversy, but i watched the video several times. Where do you see his head pushed into the floor? I see he is bleeding, but I also see him resisting too. At the begining his legs are all over the place trying to get away. Maybe he got that way because he was resisting. From the video we dont see that.
i was also told that they kid that was sick was underage and that why these kids got involved was because they didnt want thier friend in trouble. This is a very prestigous college and it wouldnt suprise me that they had cameras in the building for surveylance. Hey, I have been a college student and i know how alcohol cant make you brave.
I am writing under a psuedonym because I am a Colby alum - loyal to a fault. Irrespective of the circumstances, this is not the Colby I love.
I strongly oppose excessive alcohol use - most students are not of legal drinking age. Nevertheless, the security officers appear to lack sufficient training to address the needs of the College and its students.
Colby must find a way to deal with both issues: drinking and improved security. This event is a disgrace and serves only to besmirch the College, its students, faculty, administration and alumni.
Finally, I question the ability of the College's president to address these issues. He should take a good look in the mirror and ask himself if he's the right man for the job.
According to Colby's alcohol policies, the drunk student would not have been in trouble, merely cared for - a fact the students who were "taken down" (an official Colby security protocol) were well aware of. This student, though, had a BAC of only .1, which doesn't necessitate medical attention.
Yet, these guards did indeed act within protocol. Students were questioning them, and when asked to leave, they did not. So, they were to be "taken down". Its simply unfortunate that in the process, these kids were charged with two criminal offenses, one's nose was broken, and they went to jail without any medical care (something which is wholly illegal for law enforcers to do). Part of this was protocol, but its the Colby administration's job to re-evaluate protocol such as this.
There is much controversy in these events. I'm not trying to be polemic or riotous, but there are certain acts that are not in dispute, lack of medical care, bizarre security protocol, and drunkenness that confused the whole situation. These are problems which stand beside the possibility of police brutality.
Alex Matthiessen, President of RiverKeeper, claims that the environmental movement is "suffering" because it is "dominated by upper-middle class White folks."
