Man Arrested in Connection with Matinicus Island Shooting

image:

Yesterday, Police reported a 38-year-old lobsterman was shot in the neck on Matinicus Island, a fishing community 20 miles off the coast of Rockland.

Now officers say they have arrested Vance Bunker, a 77-year-old lobsterman, in connection with the shooting and they believe lobster fishing was at the source of the quarrel. During the arrest Police confiscated a .22-caliber handgun from Vance who is currently being held at Knox County Jail.

Though the victim’s name has yet to be confirmed, police say he was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The seriousness of his injuries is unknown.

As reported in previous Exception articles, these difficult economic times have been tough on the lobstering industry and in some cases it seems violence has been the unfortunate outcome. Some argue for an all-around boat tie up in order to raise lobster prices.

What do you make of this outbreak of violence within the lobstering industry?
