Maine's Lobster Hotties

Everyone knows that someone who harvests lobsters off the Maine coast is called a lobsterman. The tough profession of the sea is so strongly associated with men, we don't even know what the politically correct term is for women who fish for these tasty crustaceans. Lobsterwomen? Lobster Ladies? Female person who lobsters for a living?

Yet there are plenty of women who catch lobsters in Maine, even if statistics are hard to find. And they deserve their due too.

It seems that's why Brunswick's Ochiltree Productions created a '2012 Lobster Calendar' featuring Maine's finest lobsterwomen. Here's the background info, according to the Ochiltree website:

Before the days of hoists and rubber bands, when men were men, and lobster men looked like Popeye because they had to, there were not many female lobster workers. The old prejudices about women being a curse on ships has given way to the new reality of lobster workers who may wear skirts when they're not working. This new breed of XX lobster workers is, in many ways, as strong and brave and smart as the old breed. Increasingly, too, many of them are captains of their own boats. This calendar is a tribute to their story, and the courage of women whom we always knew were just that capable all along.

We reached out to Ochiltree for comment but they never got back to the Exception. If we hear from them, we will let you know.

In the meantime, catch this clip of the hotties that was posted for all to enjoy on YouTube. If you are so inclined, you can purchase the calendar on the Ochiltree Productions website.
