Maine's Hand Sewn Shoe Industry

The shoe industry in Maine was once the state's largest source of industrial jobs. But after a steep decline in the 20th century, during which tanneries and shoe makers shuttered and sent jobs abroad, there are still a handful of legacy players across the state.

In the video above, a Maine shoe maker shares his craft. With 32 years experience, this cobbler can make up to 30 hand sewn shoes a day.
