Maine's Cleanest Beaches

image:

Can you believe it's now July? Whenever the sun does shine upon the Pine Tree State, many of us will hit the beach.

The first week of July is also National Clean Beaches Week. The Clean Beaches Council has just published their annual list of America's cleanest beaches.

Twenty states were analyzed and two beaches from Maine, Sand Beach and Echo Beach, both in Acadia National Park, made their list. They have been designated as "Blue Wave" beaches, those that meet the standards of the Council's environmental certification program.

“Because of the recession, the summer travel season is expected to be lighter than it has been in recent years, according to the Travel Industry Association of America, but still beaches remain one of the most popular destinations,” Walter McLeod, President of the Clean Beaches Council said. “Even though millions of Americans spend time at beaches, there is still no easy way to determine which are clean and well managed. We hope our program increases public awareness of our individual responsibility to keep beaches clean and safe.”

All of Maine's are relatively clean, especially when compared to those in other states.

What do you think is the cleanest, greenest beach in Maine?

Maine Beaches

Don't forget Pemaquid Beach and Southport's beach. Both are beautiful.
