What Physicians Know About Healthcare

image:

I had a long conversation with my favorite physician, who has operated on me twice successfully. He is an incredibly kind person without an ounce of greed or pretense. Like other physicians I have spoken to, he spoke eloquently about the terrible times he consistently has with private health insurance companies.

While he praises Medicare for its simplicity and certainty, he has absolutely nothing positive to say about private insurers. They take up huge amounts of time of him and his staff, trying in every possible way to deny services to their customers (his patients) and also to pay as little as possible to him. His endless struggles with the insurance companies make his life miserable. Meanwhile all he cares about is giving his patients the very best care and not making them suffer because of their insurance carriers.

Like so many of us he sees the need for major reforms of our health care system, but remains pessimistic about what Congress and President Obama will eventually deliver. He is incredulous at how executives of private insurers make vast amounts of money while making physicians and their patients suffer endless annoyances and negative impacts on health care. And they get away with making people pay more and more money for worse and worse insurance.

He also has many stories about patients that do not take medications for long term chronic conditions because they cannot afford prescriptions. He gives out as many samples that he can get, is angry that people in other nations pay much less for brand name drugs, and feels terrible for his patients because the US health care system has let them down.

What would be the ideal solution to the current health care mess? My doctor believes that opening up Medicare to everyone would be wonderful, and the system could be opened up immediately. I totally agree. There is no sound reason for Congress to protect the private health insurance industry. But of course they always have and always will because it is the source of huge amounts of money for political campaigns.

While no one should be forced into Medicare, just making it available to all who want it would be fair. If private colleges compete with public ones, and private for profit hospitals compete with nonprofit ones, why shouldn’t health insurance companies be put in a similar position?

Corruption blocks true and necessary health care reform. Remember that the next time you vote.

Wrong

I believe decent Medicare is deserved by everyone. Private insurers should be given some strict guidelines by the government to follow so that normal citizens aren't affected. Things just get out of control at times and are often dificult to be contained. In an industry as delicate as health, things should be more organized.

The future of healthcare

I think health insurance is something that ever person needs, but who is ultimately responsible to pay the bill? The US keeps going further and further into debt and it continues to drive the value of the dollar down. I believe that people should be able to choose what they want and not have the government demand it.

Health insurance is must

Healthy is everything for all of us. We just can try everything to make our body keep health. But, sick is a must thing because we are human, and we can't avoid that. We don't know when we are start to feel sick, the only one we can do is preparing that time. So I think health insurance is something must we have.

Totally agree

I'm in total agreement with Shirley. Granted we don't have astronomical income tax like the Canadians but places like where I live (New York) it's at a point where you can barely afford to live there WITHOUT insurance. Ridiculous...

Competition & Smart Policy Are The Answer

I believe you are right about making the health insurance companies compete. While maybe it would be beneficial if medicare plays a bigger role, I think the biggest benefit would come if people could buy insurance from any company, no matter what state they live in. It makes no sense why this is not the case, other then to make the insurance business more profitable for the big wigs. If you do that and also force companies to offer insurance to people with preexisting conditions and not let them cancel a policy when someone is sick, then I think things would be much better for patients, doctors, nurses, and other staff including nursing assistant workers.

Fixing the system

The healthcare system needs to be fixed now. Health insurance is overpriced. At least Obama helped in terms of education. The Obama college grants he provided really helped those who could not afford college tuition.

I think Medicare should be offered to anyone of immediate family that is WORKING. Too many lower-class citizens do NOT work, they just live off of the government, and expect to have their health benefits covered. That is why Medicare is not offered to everyone, because the lazy are the ones who are exploiting the system.

to be honest

I think it's hopeless. Healthcare in the US is a sinking ship. Either go down with it like the captain, or high tail it out of here. Personally, I prefer to use fancy anti-wrinkle creams so that even while I'm dying on the inside, I still look good on the outside, for the remainder of my time here.

Good discussion

The article has been really very information and quite a handy piece with detailed discussion on the matter discussed about.Keep up the better effort and help us get to know more with valuable info's.

Health care should be

Health care should be accessible to everyone who wants or needs it. Maybe it could help broaden Medicare's coverage if private health insurance companies were to work side-by-side with Medicare. Maybe a few more benefits for those who would pay extra like being able to use a private room instead of a ward! That way, there would be a way to keep watch over the private health insurance companies and Medicare can be more accessible.

The only possible reason on

The only possible reason on why congress would delay or eventually stop Medicare from being expanded is because they are on the private insurance companies payroll!

healthcare has been lambasted

healthcare has been lambasted ,however it is in place in spite of the floodlights on it and the burden of expectation, not like the homes for sale by owner due to the financial problems in the economy, it is mainly a policy issue
but needs improvement
