Trump has had three marriages, which have been well documented in the tabloid media.[356] His personal life has gained extensive media coverage.[357]

Trump married Czech model Ivana Zelníčková on April 7, 1977, at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York.[358] They have three children: sons Donald, Jr.(born December 31, 1977) and Eric (born January 6, 1984), and daughter Ivanka (born October 30, 1981). Ivana became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1988, with Trump at her side.[359] Trump is popularly known as “The Donald,” a nickname perpetuated by the media after Ivana referred to him as such in a 1989 Spy Magazine cover story.[360][361] By early 1990, Trump’s troubled marriage to Ivana and long-running affair with actress Marla Maples had become widely documented in the tabloid press.[21][362] The couple divorced in 1991.[363] In 1992, Donald Trump sued Ivana for $25 million, alleging that she was not honoring a gag clause in their divorce agreement by disclosing facts about him.[364][365][366][367][368]

Maples gave birth to their daughter Tiffany on October 13, 1993. They married two months later on December 20, 1993.[369] The couple formally separated in May 1997,[370] with their divorce finalized in June 1999.[371][372]

In 1998, Trump began a relationship with Slovenian-born fashion model Melania Knauss.[373][374] They became engaged in April 2004[375] and were married on January 22, 2005 at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, on the island of Palm Beach, Florida, followed by a reception at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.[376][377][378] In 2006, Melania became a naturalized U.S. citizen.[374] In March 2006, she gave birth to their son named Barron William Trump.[379][380] (Trump had previously used the pseudonym “John Baron” in some business deals and when communicating with journalists.[19][70][381]) Having spoken the language since his childhood, Barron is fluent in Slovenian.[382] In a February 2009 interview on ABC’s news program Nightline, Trump commented on his ex-wives: “I just know it’s very hard for them [Ivana and Marla] to compete because I do love what I do. I really love it.”[383]

Trump has seven grandchildren: five from his son Donald Jr. (Kai Madison, Donald John III, Tristan Milos, Spencer Frederick, and Chloe Sophia)[384][385][386] and two from his daughter Ivanka (Arabella Rose and Joseph Frederick).
